The project

New build and renovation of a sports centre: timber structure, steel sheet and translucent panels that bring daylight down to the court.

The project covered both the new build and the renovation of the sports centre. The façades are clad in steel sheet, which gives the complex a contemporary, hard-wearing look.

High-performance window systems improve the building's energy efficiency: they bring in natural light and cut heat loss, in line with the aims of sustainability and functionality.

[01] · The complex

Three volumes and an access street.

From a distance the complex reads as a set of boxes: the large halls, tall and metal-clad, and the service blocks, low and built in stone.

[02] · The envelope

One opaque skin, one that lets the light through.

Profiled steel sheet closes the solid panels. Where the hall needs light, the façade switches to translucent cladding that lights the space without glare.

[03] · Construction

Timber first, then the skin.

The timber structure was erected by crane, frame by frame. The roof and the cladding then went on over it.
